If you’re considering buying a new car, you’ll naturally want to know everything there is to know about the kind of warranty you’ll be receiving. After all, a car doesn’t come cheap. You’re probably aware that all cars do have some sort of warranty on it, but read on to find out the details.

Well, the first surprising fact to wrap your head around is that your new car could come to you with as many as 10 or more warranties. Yes, these include warranties for the entire car or specific components and can vary in the length of their coverage.

Here’s a list of the twelve most common types of car warranties out there with an explanation of the most important five:

1. The Bumper-to-bumper car warranty: Don’t let the name mislead you into thinking that this warranty covers practically everything that’s part of your new vehicle. That isn’t the case. What this type of warranty does cover are all the parts manufactured by the car company (read, electrical parts, air conditioning, sensors, audio system, etc), and some of the accessories that have been installed by dealers. Components like tires, battery and wipers aren’t included. Maintenance isn’t included either. This warranty generally lasts for 3 years or 36,000 miles.

2. The Powertrain warranty: This type of warranty is now increasingly being offered by car manufacturers. It kicks in once the basic/ bumper-to-bumper warranty expires. While the duration of coverage is for ten years, the warranty itself covers only such components as the transmission, the engine and the drive axles. Some powertrain warranties also cover such accessories as air bags and seat belts under this warranty. Check to see if your powertrain warranty comes free or has a deductible fee involved.

3. Extended warranty: As the name denotes, this warranty option is for those owners who prefer to sign up for a warranty that goes well beyond the minimal offer of 3 years. The components that are covered under such an extended period again vary and should be check with the dealers before you opt for it. It generally involves an additional cost in the form of a deductible. Such a warranty is typically sold by the automaker and can also be transferred to other owners thereby increasing a vehicle’s resale value.

4. Emissions warranty: This warranty is related to emissions control and comes in two packages. The first is called “performance” warranty and makes it the automaker’s responsibility to make adjustments or repairs within the first two years of sale if the vehicle happens to fail such a test. The catalytic converters on the other hand, are covered for “design and defects” for a period of 8 years or 80,000 miles.

5. Rust/ Corrosion warranty: This warranty typically provides coverage for a period of six years (with no mileage limitations). The coverage is limited however and is only recognized in case of absolute perforation. Partial corrosion isn’t recognized neither is rust caused by natural elements such as hail, acid rain, etc.

6. The remaining seven are: Air bag and seat belt warranty, Batteries, Manufacturer accessories, Tires, Roadside breakdown warranty, hybrid parts and third-party component warranty.
